Symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) in Persons with Severe Intellectual Disability Create Date: 11/30/2011 4:49:03 PM
 
GERD is characterized by stomach acid backing up (reflux) into the esophagus. GERD is usually felt as heartburn, or burning sensation, in the esophagus, and can cause inflammation of the esophageal lining, recurrent pneumonia, bronchitis, and can lead to cancer.

In a recent article in the journal Nature, Dr. Laurent Mottron discussed the advantages that people with autism have in certain mental tasks. Mottron, a psychiatry professor and cognitive neuroscience researcher, has done extensive work with people who have the disorder – he even employs people with autism for his research team. It is this experience from which Mottron draws his argument for the re-imagining of how society treats and teaches children and adults with an autism spectrum disorder.

Atypical Antipsychotic Medication and Weight Gain Create Date: 11/2/2011 4:02:45 PM
 
In the Journal of Mental Health Research in Intellectual Disabilities (ID), the article “Why Research On the Pharmacogenetics of Atypical Antipsychotic-Induced Weight Gain in Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities is Warranted”, identifies psychotropic medications as commonly used for “problem behaviors” in people with ID.

New ADHD Guidelines Updated to Include Broader Age Range Create Date: 10/27/2011 2:05:26 PM
 
The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued an updated set of guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The updated guidelines were published in Pediatrics, volume 128, number 5, November 2011.

Impact of Cognitive Impairment on Life Expectancy Create Date: 10/4/2011 8:50:56 AM
 
In a recently published report in the September 6, issue of the “Annuals of Internal Medicine” Dr, Greg A. Sachs reports that even mild cognitive impairment has “a strong impact of life expectancy” according to Medscape.com. The article goes on to state that the impact on life expectancy is of the magnitude of chronic diseases like diabetes.

The Elisabeth Kubler-Ross Foundation website provides helpful resources on the grieving process that can be applied to everyone, including people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD) and their caregivers.

In David Hingsburger’s book, I Contact: Sexuality and people with Developmental Disabilities , he writes that research indicates that the lives of people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (ID/DD) are typified by loneliness and depression. He goes on to write that it is caregiver’s jobs to give people with ID/DD the opportunity to see themselves in a different way. “To see themselves as viable people who are essentially good. To see themselves as people through the disability. To see themselves as essentially able.” –David Hingsburger

Autism Study Cites Environment as Playing a Larger Role Than Previously Thought Create Date: 7/14/2011 10:44:55 AM
 
In a recently published study in the July issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry, Joachim Hallmayer of Stanford University claims that environmental factors may play a much larger role in the development of autism than previously thought. The study he and his team conducted analyzed the rates of autism spectrum disorders in both fraternal and identical twins.

Birth Spacing an Influence in Autism? Create Date: 6/13/2011 2:59:05 PM
 
Peter Bearman of Columbia University in New York has recently spearheaded a study that shows evidence of ‘birth spacing’ being an influencing factor on the development of autism spectrum disorder. The study looked at the chances of a second-born child developing the disorder when born less than two years after a first-born child. Bearman said that even when taking other factors into account, such as parents’ age and family history of the disorder, birth spacing still seemed to be a consistent factor.
